Ariyalaur: Alagar, 26, who obtained a tractor loan from a private finance firm, committed suicide at Orathur in Ariyalur district on Thursday following alleged torture by the firm to repay the loan.
He repaid Rs 5 lakh and did not repay a few instalments in the last few months. Following this, it was alleged the firm officials tortured him and his family members.
On Thursday, a few persons claiming to be the firm’s collection agents, tortured Alagar at V Kaikatti and forcibly took away the front portion of the tractor.
Following this, he consumed poison and swooned on the roadside at V Kaikatti. He was rushed to a private hospital at Eelapalur, where he died, The body was also cremated the same day. Ariyalur district DMK secretary and Kunnam MLA, S.S. Sivasankar met the family members and expressed their condolences.
Sivasankar told newsmen that since the deceased had repaid Rs 5 lakh, the finance firm could have given some more time for him for further repayment. The state government should inquire into the incident immediately and prevent such recurrence.
