Hyderabad: Cannon found near Charminar

The cannon is believed to have been cast in the 1780s by Monsieur Raymond.

Hyderabad: An ancient cannon was found during digging to widen the Hussaini Alam to Koka-ki-Tatti road in the Charminar division on Saturday.
The GHMC in order to widen the road had demolished an old building. The cannon was found by a worker while digging the ground.

Witnesses informed the Charminar police of the find. Hundreds of people gathered at the spot as news of the find spread quickly. Heritage enthusiast Mohd Safiullah said that it was a “very interesting and significant find”.

The cannon was cast at Gunfoundry under the guidance of the Frenchman Monsieur Raymond in the 1780s. Similar cannons are available at the gun park, he said.

The Charminar police informed the state archaeology department to preserve the weapon. Police moved in to protect the find.

Some sources had earlier claimed that it belonged to the army of the emperor Aurangzeb and was used to attack the Golconda fort at the time of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.
