Three Keralites die in Delhi inferno

Majority of deaths took place due to asphyxiation.

Kochi: Three persons, including two women from Cheranalloor, died in the fire that broke out in a hotel at Karol Bagh in New Delhi in the wee hours of Tuesday. In all, at least 17 guests were killed in the mishap.

The deceased were identified as Nalini, 85, daughter Jayasree, 53, and son Vidyasagar, 58, of Maraparambu, ward 17 of Cheranalloor grama panchayat, said the local councillor and relatives here.All the three were part of a 13-member group of relatives from five families who had gone to attend a wedding in Delhi on February 7.

Somashekharan, brother of the deceased Jayasree, who was at the place during the incident, informed the relatives about the death on Tuesday morning. He said that the other ten members of the group were safe, according to the local councillor.

It is learnt that the group had stayed in the capital for sight-seeing after the marriage. They were about to fly back on Feb.17.

Jayasree, whose ancestral home is at Cheranalloor, was staying at her husband's home at Chottanikkara.

According to the police and local people, Jayasree’s husband Unnikrishnan was abroad while their two sons, Gauri Shankar, 23, and Hari Govind, 27, were part of the group that had gone to Delhi. They are safe. Jayasree’s death was confirmed in the morning and Nalini and Vidyasagar were missing at that time. Ernakulam MLA Hibi Eden, in his Facebook post, said that his office had contacted Somashekharan who confirmed the death. “The other ten members have been safely moved to the hospital. I have written to the chief minister requesting to extend emergency aid,” Mr Eden said in his post.
