Thiruvananthapuram: Abdul Shukoor murder rocks Assembly

The speaker said that the state government was not involved in any way in this case and that the case is pending in the court.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Assembly was adjourned sine die on Tuesday after it witnessed unruly scenes over the speaker’s rejection of an adjournment motion on the criminal conspiracy charged against CPM Kannur district secretary P. Jayarajan and T. V. Rajesh, MLA by the CBI in the Abdul Shukoor murder case.

The issues began during zero hour on the last day of the 10-day Assembly session, when Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan rejected the notice given by Sunny Joseph, Congress, under Rule 50. The speaker said that the state government was not involved in any way in this case and that the case is pending in the court.

He also pointed out that the incident was an old one which took place in 2012 and that filing the chargesheet is not an urgent matter to be taken up in the House through an adjournment motion.

Opposition Leader Ram-esh Chennithala, who fla-yed the speaker’s ruling, pointed out half a dozen similar instances that were raised in the House under Rule 50, including the solar and Suryanelli cases. However, the speaker stood by his decision. Soon the UDF legislators were on their feet and moved to the front benches shouting slogans.

Though the speaker said that the issue can be raised through a submission, it did not pacify the Opposition.

The Opposition MLAs trooped to the well of the House shouting slogans against the speaker and the LDF MLAs also rushed to the front row of the treasury benches creating unruly scenes.

Though the speaker tried to intervene, the ruckus continued. He adjourned the Assembly after replies to the 30 submissions and reports were tabled in the House.

The House also passed the Kerala Finance Bill 2019, the Kerala Coopera-tive Societies Amendm-ent Bill 2019 as reported by the subjects committee and Kerala Appropriation Bill without any discussion.
