Tamil Nadu Assembly: It will be a no ball, says D Jayakumar

Stalin will bowl you out, says DMK.

Chennai: Though high-voltage debates during the budget session are common and so too are pervasive in the Assembly House rancorous charges traded by the treasury and opposition benches, the state Assembly on Tuesday made a detour with the members sprightly alluding cricket to a poll battle.

Witty repartee came to the fore when both the ruling AIADMK and DMK alluded the upcoming Lok Sabha election to a game of cricket.

Initiating a debate on the state budget presented by Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam in the Assembly on Friday, DMK member and former state minister K. Ponmudi recalled former AIADMK minister Semmalai's remark that Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami would continue to hit sixers and win the match, and said "you will be clean bowled by a ball which will be delivered by our president Stalin."

At this, fisheries minister D. Jayakumar jibed, "it will be a no ball" and his witty response evoked a peal of laughter in the House. Joining his colleague, electricity minister P. Thangamani said, "the Opposition member is bowling without entering the field."

On Monday while participating in the discussion Mr Semmalai flayed the DMK and said it found fault with the AIADMK merely for the sake of opposition and expressed there was no logic in terming the numerous welfare schemes for the people and also farmer-friendly initiatives as "useless."

He went on to remark that the upcoming Lok Sabha election will seal the fate of the DMK and Mr. Palaniswami would clearly establish himself. "The Chief Minister will hit hat-trick sixers and win," Mr Semmalai had said.
