Amala Paul case: Anticipatory bail plea of accused dismissed

Following a hunt, the police arrested Alagesan, 40, of Kottivakkam and remanded him to Puzhal prison recently.

Chennai: The Principal Sessions Court, Chennai, has dismissed the anticipatory bail petition filed by an accused in connection with harassment of actor Amala Paul, who had lodged a complaint with the police after she was reportedly asked for sexual favours by a businessman.

On January 31, Amala Paul had lodged a complaint before Mambalam Police alleging that a person sought sexual favours and abused her while she was rehearsing in a Chennai dance studio for an event to be held in Malaysia.

The police had registered a case under sections 354A (Sexual harassment), 509 (Uttering any word or making any gesture intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

Following a hunt, the police arrested Alagesan, 40, of Kottivakkam and remanded him to Puzhal prison recently.

Similarly, another accused - Baskar, was arrested and detained in prison. Fearing arrest in the case, Razaq, manager in a private company, had approached the Principal Sessions court seeking anticipatory bail in the event of arrest.
When the matter came up for hearing before the court on Monday, the principal judge S. Subadevi dismissed his anticipatory bail plea.
