Visakhapatnam: Only a small fraction of students going to the US were deported from the port of entry due to their lack of awareness about the two-tier immigration inspections, said US Ambassador to India, Richard Verma.
Speaking to the scribes here in Visakhapatnam, Mr Verma said, “We regret the impact of deportation on the students and their families. The officials would carry a two-tier system of immigration inspections to ensure the persons have arrived in the USA for the right purpose.”
He said that United States Trade and Development Agency would extend all its technical expertise and finances for the preparation of the Master Plan for Vizag Smart City.
“The US government is also ready to extend its cooperation in the defence sector and provide technology for manufacturing fighter aircrafts and jet engines. About 25 more companies are ready to invest in India after entering into formal agreements. The year 2015 has made the bilateral relations of the USA and India reach new heights and we would hope 2016 would turn out to be year of implementation,” said Mr Verma. The trade between India and US is expected to reach $500 billion in future from the present $100 billion, he said.
The year 2015 has a seen a mammoth rise in the number of students studying in USA to a record high of 132,888, registering 29.4% growth. About 80 percent Indian students are in the field of Engineering, Maths, Computer Science and Business,” said Mr Verma. Answering a question, Mr Verma said about 200 tax cases were resolved between US and India.
