HMDA steps up efforts to keep lakes clean, visible
Hyderabad: With the objective of cleaning of lakes and the water surface area that is visible to the public, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority has deployed a floating trash collector at Durgam Cheruvu on Sunday.
The trash collector can clean the lake surface of floating dirt and also pick up water hyacinth and weeds. This also avoids human deployment in unhygienic and polluted waters.
Municipal administration principal secretary Arvind Kumar said the floating trash collectors would be deployed at lakes in urban areas where the growth of water hyacinth is seen. It will be acontinuous process.
He said that HMDA has procured seven floating trash collectors, each of which costs `1.5 crore, while the GHMC has placed an order for six.
Apart from water hyacinth and weeds, lakes in urban areas are have plastic and domestic waste dumped in them.
The water hyacinth and weed growth gives space for mosquito breeding and also generate a foul smell.
The GHMC has procured six pyrofine oil spray drones in each zone to spray larvicides. The trash collectors will be deployed at Mallannakunta in Ameenpur, Tallakunta in Ghatkesar mandal and Pasumamula cheruvu in Hayatnagar mandal in the next two months. Other lakes will be taken up in phases.
