Hyderabad: Mini jetting machines to clean sewers

The cleaning will be done in phases with 16 machines used in each of the phases I, II, III and IV.

Hyderabad: In a bid to end manual scavenging, the Greater Hyder-abad Municipal Corporation has decided to use mini-jetting machines in the 12 peripheral municipalities of the city. The corporation has decided to deploy as many as 66 machines to clear choked sewers and manholes. The cleaning will be done in phases with 16 machines used in each of the phases I, II, III and IV.

Since HMWSSB limits are confined to core areas of the erstwhile MCH jurisdiction, complaints of overflowing drains and manholes from the peripheries keep the civic body busy week after week. Several complaints are lodged and the corporation spends about '19 crore annually on maintaining sewerage lines and manholes.

A senior GHMC official said that the conventional jetting machines cannot reach the interior lanes and bylanes of residential colonies, but mini-jetting machines were coming in handy in those places. He said that the corporation will not purchase the jetting machines, only hire them after inviting tenders. Each machine will cost over '40 lakh. A GO on deploying jetting machines will be issued in a couple of days, the official said.
