Recast KTU brass, VS Achuthanandan writes to C Raveendranath

CPM leader welcomes govt intervention.

Thiruvananthapuram: CPM veteran leader V.S. Achuthanandan on Thursday demanded complete overhaul of the top brass of Kerala Technological University in the wake of the tragic death of Jishnu Prannoy at Nehru College Pampady in Thrissur district.

In a letter to education minister C. Raveendranath, the veteran leader welcomed the interim intervention made by the government following Jishnu’s suicide. However, he said the roots of the problem pointed to the chaotic system of functioning of the technological university.

Mr Achuthanandan said not just Nehru College, similar incidents of torture and harassment of students were continuing in many self financing engineering colleges across the state. It is in this background that a review of the functioning of technological university’s administrative top brass had become inevitable.

Administrative reforms commission chairman regretted that KTU was still being governed by some of the close associates of the previous UDF Government and retired officials who were appointed during that period. At the moment there were no officials or senior personnel capable of timely and effective intervention in the event of such incidents or to steadfastly uphold the LDF Government’s policies on various issues.

Mr Achuthanandan said he had earlier reminded the government about the corruption and malpractices in the conduct of examinations under the technological university. He said government should take steps without any further delay to reshuffle the top brass of the university.
