Telangana: Mobile app to give tank works information

As of now, IIIT-Hyderabad has geo tagged 42,000 tanks of which 18,000 are dried up ones.

Hyderabad: The works of rejuvenation of tanks across Telangana as part of the Mission Kakatiya programme is being made possible with help from IIIT Hyderabad which has developed a Lake Management and Monitoring System (LMMS) using GIS technology and also a mobile app for the same.

The first step which has already been taken is of identifying tanks based on longitude and latitude and providing them with unique Geo-ID. For this, three key details have been used, topographic sheets by Survey of India, satellite data of last 20 years to identify the presence of water in water bodies and finally the digital elevation model (DEM) that helps in identifying various sinks and natural drainage channels.

As of now, IIIT-Hyderabad has geo tagged 42,000 tanks of which 18,000 are dried up ones. Engineers of the irrigation department have taken up works of uploading details regarding the tank on the LMMS using mobile app like the tank’s local name, location name, if Mission Kakatiya works have been conducted or need to be taken up, the tenders passed, progress reports, if a sluice or weir is present, etc.

G. Malsur, Telangana Irrigation and Command Area Development Commissioner, said as of now information regarding 34,000 tanks have already been uploaded and in a few days’ time the data on remaining tanks will also be uploaded.
