Salem salutes its World War I heroes

The protesters held up vehicular traffic for several hours, as police bid to pacify the agitators did not bear fruit.

Salem: In a touching homage to remember the martyrs from Salem who laid down their lives during World War I, district collector C.A. Raman, laid a wreath below the memorial plaque kept in the Salem collectorate on Monday, coinciding with the conclusion of the War then on this day.

However, elsewhere in the steel town, tension gripped areas in the 59th ward of Salem municipal corporation, as people came out and blocked the key NH to Tiruchy to protest against the municipal body not taking action to pump out the sewage water that flowed into housing colonies after the recent rains.

The protesters held up vehicular traffic for several hours, as police bid to pacify the agitators did not bear fruit. At one stage as some policemen on the scene allegedly started taking pictures of women protesters on the mobile cameras, the affected women got into a heated argument with the cops,stokin tension.
