Chennai Airport: Passengers face difficulty after suspension of battery car facility

Chennai: The electric cars which helped passengers commute the passageway between international and domestic terminals have remained non-operational since November 1. The distance between these two terminals is roughly one kilometre.

In 2013, the Chennai airport was renovated and a new terminal came into existence. Considering the distance between the domestic and international terminals, the Airport Authority of India(AAI) introduced electric cars to help passengers travel the one-kilometre stretch without any hassles. The services were handed over to a private company which took over this operation. However, the operations have been suspended beginning this month start, due to unknown reasons.

When contacted Sri Kumar, Director, Chennai airport informed that the contract with the private company had ended. He added that the airport authorities are in talks with CMRL board to take over this service.” The contract will be handed over to the CMRL and will resume in 10 days time”, he said requesting the passengers to use the walkalator until then.

Meanwhile, passengers especially the elderly, pregnant women and families with infants are facing difficulties over the sudden suspension of electric car services, said sources. They have also reached out to the airport authorities to resolve this issue at the earliest.
