SC's order on school, slums ineffective

In 2004, 90 children died in a major fire at school in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. The incident created an uproar in the nation.

The Supreme Court then issued a guideline asking all schools to form fire safety panels, with adequate representation to parents. In reality, a majority of the schools have not only violated the orders but many don’t even seek fire safety certificates.

At another time, the SC ordered that slum dwellers should be given alternative accommodation while a regional municipal body carries out demolition of illegal houses in which they live. The order has not been carried out so far.

Another order of the SC banning tinted car windows are blatantly violated. Many states failed to impose a ban. While it was implemented in the city, the tints are back on the window glasses of many vehicles.

During the release of the controversial film Padmavat, the SC ordered adequate security. Theatre owners feared attacks from Rajput community activists and refused to screen the movie.
