Lucknow: In the midst of the prevailing currency crisis, rumours of an acute shortage of table salt sent prices soaring in parts of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.

UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said there was no shortage of salt. He further urged people not to pay attention to the rumours. Lucknow mayor Dinesh Sharma said that strong action must be taken against those who had spread rumours. Police has been put on alert and asked to dispel rumours.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government also appealed to Delhiites not to pay attention to rumours of shortage of salt in the city and assured that there is no scarcity of such essential commodity. Rumours of salt shortage triggered panic among people in the evening who rushed to markets to buy salt in some of markets in the national capital.
