Old notes can be used till Nov 14 to pay utility bills: Centre

The announcement co-mes at a time when the RBI and banks are finding it difficult to meet the demand for new notes.

New Delhi: The government on Friday extended the use of demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees as well as purchases from co-operative stores by another 72 hours till November 14.

The announcement co-mes at a time when the RBI and banks are finding it difficult to meet the demand for new notes. Banks and ATMs are running out of cash. The Union ministry of road transport and highways has extended its order not to charge toll on national highways till November 14.

Payment for court fees will be included in the exemptions. Payments towards utility bills will be restricted to individuals and households for arrears or current bills. No advance payments will be allowed.

Old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes will be accepted for payment of fees, charges, taxes, penalty to Central and state governments, including municipalities and local bodies. They will also be accepted for payment of utility charges such as water, electricity.
