Chennai: Three-day symposium on cancer care inaugurated

Cancer hospitals and centres have been working towards taking cancer care to the next frontier.

Chennai: With the burden of cancer reaching new heights in the recent past, cancer hospitals and centres have been working towards taking cancer care to the next frontier. With this as the backdrop, Apollo Cancer Institutes, on Friday, inaugurated its three-day symposium titled 'Contemporary Advances in Precision Oncology' in the city. With a proton centre being introduced at Apollo - the first of its kind in South Asia — the doctors felt the need to create more awareness on this form of treatment. The conference which is a confluence of commitment and technology, aims at making the public aware of various new forms of cancer treatment, especially Proton beam radiotherapy. “The form of treatment reduces the possibility of developing side effects in a patient receiving cancer treatment,” said Dr Ramesh Rengan, Medical Director, University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr Prathap C. Reddy, chairman, Apollo Hospitals, while inaugurating the symposium, stressed on the need to tackle non communicable diseases better.“The pending work for the upcoming proton centre is expected to be completed by next year,” he added.
