Land for amenities, wider roads: Infosys shows the way

BENGALURU: Software giants Infosys, Wipro and other companies like NTTI and ITI have been at the forefront of infrastructure development of the Electronics City Industrial Township (Elcita). N.S. Rama, Chief Executive Officer, ELCITA, told DC that several companies have extended a helping hand by parting with their land for the widening of roads and the improvement of junctions across the sprawling, 903-acre property.

The software hub, which was under the Panchayats, is now a self-sustaining township. Infosys, for instance, has volunteered to part with 1,235 square metres for junction improvement and road-widening. This has helped enable better infrastructural facilities and beat the burgeoning traffic snarls, while companies have volunteered their property for an elevated corridor. ELCITA has also formed a committee to look into infrasctructural shortcomings, with representatives of Wipro, Infosys, Siemens and other companies as members. Based on the requirements, several companies volunteer to part with property for the welfare of their employees and those working in the neighbourhood," she explained.

"Many of the roads and junctions are narrow. Due to the increased vehicular population, the township is facing a space crunch with regard to certain crucial projects," said Ms Rama. Various measures have been taken to ease congestion and make life easier for commuters and employees alike. On an average, the township caters to a floating population of about two lakh, she added.

Sources said that BDA has issued (Transferable Development Rights) certificates to Infosys in lieu of the land relinquished for the development of the area. The TDR will be issued to other companies who have given up their land as well.

The government has planned to extend Metro services to Electronics city as part of the South extension from RV College. Again, companies have shown interest in offering their land for Metro stations and other related facilities, say sources.

Traffic management, disciplined parking and designated auto stands are some of the commuter friendly initiatives which companies have pledged to follow, added sources.
