1,12,443 children vaccinated in Kozhikode

Kozhikode: As many as 1,12,443 children have been vaccinated under the measles rubella (MR) vaccination campaign in the district as on Monday.

Though the campaign had kick started on October 3, only seven days chould be counted as the schools were closed on Saturday and Sunday.

There was no stiff resistance from any pockets barring a few, district authorities said.

Two schools in the city limits, which had shown reluctance earlier, agreed to convene separate PTA meetings after the intervention of Indian Association of Pediatrics’ (IAP).

Another two schools, one in Perambra and another in Mavoor, were left to the consideration of the district collector for the non-cooperation. Of this, a ‘scary consent letter’ had been prepared by the teachers in a school seeking the permission of the parent to allow his child taking vaccine.

“Special awareness classes and PTA meetings are being convened in schools where lack of communication is reported. This is proved to be very effective,” said district medical officer (DMO) Dr V. Jayashree.

A private school, Sreebhadra School in Cheruvannur, had administered vaccination to all of its students, according to a press release from the office of DMO.

The district authorities have set a target of 7,38,694 children, aged between 9 months and 15 years, for vaccination. The month-long campaign is being carried out through 1,745 schools in the first two weeks.
