Timeline of the Pampore standoff between terrorists and the Army

At about 6.30 am on October 10, two militants entered the sprawling campus of the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute.

Here is a timeline of the gunbattle between terrorists and security forces in Pampore, which ended on Wednesday afternoon.

Day One

At about 6.30 am, two militants enter the sprawling campus of the Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) using the rear (river) side.

They occupy the 7-storey hostel building and set on fire a few mattresses to attract the attention.

By 8.00 am, the Army and other security forces encircle the camps at Sempora, Pampore along Srinagar-Jammu highway.

Fighting breaks out; one Army jawan is injured in foot.

Army fires mortars and other projectiles to ‘neutralize’ militants. The building suffers damage. Flames and thick smoke is seen billowing from the edifice.

UAVs are used for surveillance and reconnaissance.

Firing from militants stops and at the nightfall the operation is suspended by the security forces to avoid casualties.

Floodlights and other equipment is used to keep vigil at and around the campus to prevent the militants from escaping during the night.

Day Two:

The operation resumes with first light.

The Army again fires mortars, rocket-propelled-grenades and machine-guns at the building causing extensive damage to it.

No firing from holed up militants.

At 5. 30 pm, one of the militants jumps out of a window; is killed.

Operation is again suspended at nightfall.

Day Three:

The operation resumes at 7.15 am.

The troops launch ‘decisive’ assault.

At 9.15 am, five commandos of Army’s Parachute Regiment enter the building through a window using a ladder.

At 4.15 pm the Army and police officials announce the stand-off has ended. Both militants have been killed.

The Army says the militants survived because the 7-storey building was like a concrete bunker for them.

Over 50 rockets and hundreds of grenades besides machine-guns are used in the operation during about 60-hour-long operation.
