Kerala: Flawed culvert work irks MLA John Fernandez

As part of the construction, there are traffic diversions along Kaloor North stretch.

Kochi: Though the much-delayed reconstruction of the low-lying culvert along Thevara Perandoor Canal at Kaloor has begun, there are complaints against the works.

In a letter sent to the Minister for Public Works G. Sudhakaran, John Fernandez MLA has raised the unscientific construction of the culvert.

“The plan is to reconstruct the low-lying culvert with sufficient height and depth to ensure the smooth flow of water along the narrow stretch of the canal. Authorities should take immediate steps to increase the height of the structure,” said John Fernandez.

The culvert reconstruction has started as part of the Metro Rail works to prevent regular water-logging in areas including Gandhi Nagar, Kathrikkadavu, Kaloor south, Judges Avenue, Ambedkar Colony, Journalist Colony and LIG Colony.

As part of the construction, there are traffic diversions along Kaloor North stretch.
Earlier, the residents in the area had approached the state government and the Corporation several times demanding reconstruction of the culvert and it is only after many years of protest that the authorities have finally taken up the work.
