TN Pollution board issues instructions on immersion

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has given out instructions on the immersion of idols for the upcoming Ganesha Chaturthi festival.

Requesting the public to celebrate the festival without polluting the environment, the district environmental engineer has said that idols made up of raw clay, potato flour or sago waste will only be permitted for immersion in the water bodies.

Ones painted with harmful chemicals will not be allowed, he said. The idols which are painted with natural and water-soluble dyes, however, can be immersed.

The public must also note that areas of immersion will be demarcated and notified by the district administration and only there can safe immersion take place, the district environmental engineer said.
