Thanjavur: 8-year-old infrastructure project dusted off
Thanjavur: The proposed Vikkravandi-Thanjavur road was upgraded into four-way national highway and brought under National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in 2006. Estimates were prepared for the project in 2010 and Central government allotted Rs 3,680 crore for the project. For the distance of 48-km from Cholapuram near Kumbakonam to Thanjavur in the road project, a sum of Rs 1,176 crore has been allotted.
For Cholapuram-Sethiyathoppu stretch for a distance of 50.48-km, a sum of Rs 1127.87 crore has been allotted.
As much as 40 per cent of the cost will be borne by NHAI, 20 per cent to 25 per cent by the developer and the rest could be raised through debts by the contractor company.
The road is laid under the Build, Finance. Operate and Transfer (BDFOT) model and toll will be collected for 27 years after completion and put to use. A sum of Rs 302.50 crore has been allotted for land acquisition and rehabilitation of the displaced people.
