Lost bag with gold worth Rs 15 lakh recovered from Tambaram station
Chennai: A handbag containing gold worth Rs 15 lakh, Rs 2,500 cash and several other important documents were recovered from Tambaram railway station on Monday evening.
The constable on rounds, Rajesh Yadav, found an abandoned bag on platform 7 of Tambaram railway station and alerted his station head who in turn alerted the bomb disposal squad. At around the same time, the RPF control room received a distress call from a passenger aboard Nellai Express from Chennai to Tirunelveli claiming to have misplaced their bag on platform 7.
It was then discovered that G. Jebavel Raj, 32, a software engineer in the city, and his wife were headed to Tirunvelveli to attend a wedding on Tuesday morning when Jebavel’s wife left behind her handbag containing all her jewellery on the platform itself.
The train usually stops only for a few minutes at Tambaram and they had to get on board the train in a hurry, the couple had told the police. In the chaos, the bag containing the jewellery, cash, a mobile phone, and other various documents was left behind. However, the couple alerted the RPF using a helpline immediately and therefore, the bag could be recovered, police sources said.
The couple got off the Nellai Express at the next station, in Chengalpet and returned to Tambaram where the police, after questioning handed over the bag to them.
