Key accused in Coimbatore blasts held

Tamil Nadu's CB-CID arrested N.P. Noohu alias Rasheed, 44, a native of Mankavu in the city, on Monday evening, the police said here.

Kozhikode: A key accused in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bombings, which killed 58 and wounded 200 innocent people, has landed in police custody.

Tamil Nadu's CB-CID arrested N.P. Noohu alias Rasheed, 44, a native of Mankavu in the city, on Monday evening, the police said here.

He had escaped to Qatar after the blasts at 11 places in the second major city of Tamil Nadu 20 years ago evading the police.

The CBCID sleuths reached here on secret information the intelligence wing received on his return. They produced him before a court in Chennai after preliminary interrogation.

A case was registered against him by the Coimbatore city B1 Bazaar police station in 1998.

The charges against him include criminal conspiracy, murder and attempt to murder under IPC, and violation of Explosive Substance Act 1908 and Arms Act.

The cops believe he had clear information on the plot behind the serial blasts and the trial court had declared him as a ‘proclaimed offender’.

The bombs went off on February 14, 1998, ahead of the visit of the then BJP president L.K. Advani.
