Jagtial bus accident: Brake fail might be behind crash

The technical staff of the bus depot say that buses are often put into neutral mode to save fuel when descending.

JAGTIAL: Road accidents have become common at Kondagattu as devotees to the Kondagattu temple come in large numbers in autos, jeeps and other modes of transport. The brakes of the bus might have been the reason behind the death of 57 pilgrims of the temple.

The driver of the bus that met with a fatal accident on Tuesday, Srinivas, got the ‘best driver’ award this year on Independence Day, August 15. He worked out of the Karimnagar bus depot. There are two ways to reach the top of the Kondagattu temple. One has a sharp slope and the other is generally used by commuters. Today, the bus which met with the accident took the second route which was already closed for some time.

The technical staff of the bus depot say that buses are often put into neutral mode to save fuel when descending. But often the breaks will not catch immediately afterwards It is said that the driver might have put the bus in neutral mode while coming down to the main road from the top of the hill and the breaks might not have caught immediately when the driver wanted to slow down.
