Tamil Nadu: Tourists not allowed in water catchment areas

Chennai: Tourists planning a visit to water bodies and falls in western districts are likely to be disappointed as the district administrations has alerted revenue officials not to permit tourists in water catchment areas due to heavy rains along Cauvery river basin.

In the past four days Kodaikanal, Ooty, Moonar and Gudalur have witnessed minor landslides affecting the arrival of tourists to hilly areas.

Madhukkarai reserve forests in Coimbatore circle also saw damages to its checks dams constructed two decades ago. The heavy inflow of water in to the 6 acre and 10 acre check dams in Madhukkarai broke on Sunday due to heavy rains.

Coracle services in Hogenakkal had been suspended for the 11th consecutive day with Hogenakkal receiving an inflow of above 15,000 cusecs. On Sunday the inflow touched 19,000 cusecs and it continued on Monday increasing the storage capacity of mettur dam by 2 feet within 24 hours.

Mettur, the lifeline of delta farmers had storage up to 75 feet against its total capacity of 120 feet bringing cheers to farmers of western and central districts.

According to PWD sources, who are now monitoring the inflow into reservoirs, more than six falls across the state are now restricted for public bathing due to heavy inflow.

Police and revenue teams have been pressed in to service to ensure that the tourists do not enter the restricted flood prone areas.
