Poor monsoon hits crops hard in Telangana

Crops sown on 2.25 lakh acres of the 10 lakh acres in the state have been lost so far.

Hyderabad: The poor monsoon this year, resulting in a prolonged dry spell, has destroyed crops, especially in five districts of the state.

The agriculture department has told the government that crops on 2.25 lakh acres of the 10 lakh acres sown have been lost so far and another five acres of sown crop is threatened if there is no adequate rainfall by September 30, when the Kharif season ends.

The worst affected crops are maize, soyabean, cotton and jowar. The crop losses are huge in Ranga Reddy, Vikarabad, Nirmal, Mahabubnagar and Nagarkurnool districts.

Mahabubnagar is the worst-affected district having lost 80 per cent of its maize crop sown on 49,000 acres.

In Nagarkurnool, maize sown on 17,802 acres has been damaged and in Ranga Reddy cultivated crop on 53,072 acres has been damaged. In Nirmal district, the soyabean crop sown on 25,000 acres has withered away.
