Water gushes out from crater on national highway near Mannuthy

There are no underground water pipelines in this area and it seems that it is a very serious issue.

Thrissur: In the National Highway six-lane toll way between Mannuthy and Vadakkenchery, the local residents spotted a strange phenomenon of water gushing out of a tar-filled crater on the road on Sunday evening at Vettikkal Junction near Mannuthy.

RTI activist P.B. Satheesh, who posted a video about the issue on social media, said that water was seen coming out of the middle track on the three-lane on one side of the median while travelling from Palakkad to Thrissur (Vadakkenchery to Mannuthy).

"There are no underground water pipelines in this area and it seems that it is a very serious issue. Several wells in the area were filled for expanding the national highway and it seems that water is now coming from an area where a well was reclaimed without proper reinforcement. With every heavy vehicle passing on this track, the area of the road where the water is gushing out is sinking. There is a need for immediate action from the side of district collector and NHAI to prevent a disaster on the road," Mr Satheesh said.

Mannuthy Police, who reached the spot, said that they had informed National Highway Authority of India, but none from the Authority turned up till 9.30 p.m.
