Tiruchy: Peravai seeks Kannagi memorial in Poompuhar

Tiruchy: Members of the Desiya Chettiyargal Peravai on Sunday appealed to the Central and state governments to establish a 800-feet-long ‘Karpukkarasi Kannagi’ statue with memorial (manimandapam) for Kannangi at Lower camp at Theni district and Poompuhar in Nagapattinam district.

Briefing newsmen on the resolutions adopted at the state-level meeting of the Peravai here on Sunday, Peravai founder P.L.A. Jagannath Mishra and its secretary P. Panneerselvam Chettiar said that although the Kannagi Kottam - memorial for ‘Karupukarasi Kamnnagi’ is situated at Lower camp in Theni district, the Kerala govt stakes claim to it.

Hence, they are planning to move the Supreme Court for a direction declaring the existing Kannagi memorial is well within Tamil Nadu only. They also appealed to Chief Minister Edapadi K. Palaniswami to arrange worship for Kannagi, throughout the year.

Besides, the Peravai wanted Chettiyar community to be declared as Most Backward class. The Chettiyars Chamber of Commerce will be formally launched in Chennai on August 24, where Deputy Chief Minister O.P. Panneerselvam and others are supposed to address a meeting.
