Swollen Tungabhadra enters temples at Hampi

The heavy outflows submerged historic temples and structures at Hampi.

ANANTAPUR: Heavy flashfloods from the upstream parts of Tungabhadra reservoir amounting to 72 tmc ft has been received within a week and the Tungabhadra Board has been releasing 67,754 cusecs of water as outflows into the river towards Srisailam through Hampi and Mantralayam.

The heavy outflows submerged historic temples and structures at Hampi, the main capital of Vijayanagar empire in Bellary district on Sunday.

The five centuries-old St.Purandaradasa mantap located closer to the river was submerged due to heavy flows into the river. Further, the water level had reached the danger mark at Chakratheertha and road access was submerged.

The historic Lord Srirama temple at Chakratheertha, which was the mark of Lord Srirama’s visit and stay at Kishkinda is about to be submerged in a day, sources said.

Local M. Dhananjaya told this newspaper that the statues of Lord Srirama would also be submerged and there would be no access to reach Lord Yantroddaraka Hanuman temple, consecrated by St.Vyasaraja five centuries ago.

Tunbabhadra Board official sources said water level in the reservoir was just 16.72 tmc ft last Monday while heavy floods from the upstream of the western Ghats resulted in it being 88.66 TMC ft on Sunday. “We had never witnessed such heavy flows in a short period during previous years. The inflow was 2,10,282 as against 74,539 cusecs on the same day last year,” board engineers said.

The Tungabhadra dam is likely to reach maximum water level as against actual capacity of100.86 tmc ft.
