Srisailam dam set to receive record inflows

Water from Tungabhadra river to reach Srisailam reservoir in three days, says official.

KURNOOL: The Priyadarshini Jurala Project (PJP), the last project on Krishna river before the Srisailam reservoir, received historic inflows of 8.65 lakh cusecs from the upstream Narayanapur dam in Karnataka.

This is the largest inflow after 2009 when 18.5 lakh cusecs flooded the project and submerged Kurnool city. The project opened all 62 gates to let out 8,52,165 cusecs of water to Srisailam. The dam received 6.68.861 cusecs and the outflow was 6,80,510 cusecs. Another 1.10 lakh cusecs were diverted to the TS and AP power utilities and Rayalaseema.

The water level stood at 880.90 feet against the total dam height of 885 ft while storage was measured at 192.96 tmc ft against the full capacity of 215 tmc ft. Officials are leaving a margin as continuous heavy inflows are expected due to the floods upstream.

Mr C. Narayana Reddy, Chief Engineer (Projects), said said the Tungabhadra dam is receiving inflows of 2.2 lakh cusecs and the same is being released to the Tungabhadra river which may reach Srisailam within three days.
