Maharashtra people travel to Telangana for liquor
ADILABAD: History repeats but in a different direction. People from the border districts of Maharashtra including some policemen are coming to the undivided Adilabad district following a liquor ban in Chandrapur and Gachiroli districts.
The trend was first seen when liquor was banned under the Telugu Desam government in the 1990s in undivided AP. People from Adilabad and Kari-mnagar used to travel 20 km, crossing the Pranahitha, Penganga and Godavari, to drink liquor in bordering areas of Maharashtra.
Residents of Jainad mandal recalled that many people would sleep on the roadside, wake up in the morning and return to their homes in Adilabad. The prohibition era saw many road accidents involving drunk drivers. Police used to conduct regular vehicle checking near Penganga to ensure that no person carries liquor to Adilabad.
On August 7, Telang-ana state police took a Maharashtra sub-inspe-ctor into custody for creating a scene after drinking liquor in Ganeshpur in Wankidi mandal in Kumarambheem Asifabad district.
Wan-kidi police led by SI Chandrasekhar also took the Maharashtra cop’s revolver to avoid untoward incidents. Wankidi mandal shares borders with the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra. The issue came to light when the drunk Maharashtra cop started asking drivers for money.
