Steps to check disease outbreak

Warning against use of well water in affected areas; sanitisation of roads begin.

Kochi: The health department authorities are taking measures to prevent the outbreak of infectious diseases in flood-hit areas. A warning has been issued against using well water in the affected places.

“Since most of the wells have been contaminated with flood water, the people have been asked not to use it. The well should be cleaned and chlorinated before water is drawn from it for drinking purposes. The maximum quantity of water should be pumped out before chlorination,” said district mass media officer Sageer Sudheendran.

Local body authorities have started cleaning of roads and other areas which were flooded. After removing the slush, the places are being sanitized and disinfected using alum and chlorine. In Eloor, municipal councillors have initiated sanitization of public areas and they are also helping the people to remove dirt from flooded houses.

The floods have brought with them poisonous creatures like snakes. A woman at Eloor suffered a snake bite while cleaning the flooded house. The woman, Deepa, had come to clean the house from a relief camp where they were shifted earlier. She has been admitted to a private hospital at Angamaly.

Meanwhile, each relief camp has been provided with the service of a medical officer from the PHC in the respective areas. A mobile medical team has been regularly visiting the relief camps to check the health condition of inmates.
