Ban on multistorey buildings goes in Chennai

The authority has also warned that there should be no construction activity in any catchment and river areas.

Chennai: Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has relaxed its guidelines allowing multistorey buildings to be constructed in layout areas unlike in the past.

The authority has also warned that there should be no construction activity in any catchment and river areas. According to CMDA officials, multistoreyed buildings are permissible under Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA), excluding areas bounded by two arms of Cooum river starting near park station to the mouth of Cooum river (Napier bridge) generally known as Island grounds.

“Approved residential layouts excepting such plots or sites, which have been reserved for construction of multi-storeyed buildings,” said the CMDA office.

Builders have welcomed such a move. S. Ramaprabhu, vice-chairman, Southern Builders Association of India, said this move will pave the way for reducing cost of the land. At present, builders are permitted to construct multi-storeyed buildings in certain places and this increases cost for buyers.

“For instance, South Chennai has many layouts and people opt to either buy or construct the multi-storeyed buildings in the same direction. In such a condition, price will skyrocket and buyers will suffer. So, the CMDA’s decision is a welcome move,” he noted.
