Tamil Nadu: Plea for panel to probe Jayalalithaa's death

There appears to be human negligence and the real cause of the death cannot be ascertained based on the hospital records.

Chennai: A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Madras high court to direct the Union government to appoint a judicial inquiry commission headed by a retired judge of the high court assisted by two leading doctors to probe the alleged mysterious death of former Chief Minister late J. Jayalalithaa.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar before whom the PIL filed by S.A. Miyajan came up for hearing posted it along with connected matters on October 23.

According to petitioner, he has filed this petition as a PIL to direct the Union government to appoint a judicial enquiry commission headed by a retired high court judge assisted by two leading doctors to ascertain the real cause of death of former Chief Minister late Jayalalithaa at Apollo hospitals on December 5, 2016 and if found to be on human negligence and mala fide, the persons responsible for the same and the nature of punishment if any to be given to them.

The death of Jayalalithaa was mysterious. There appears to be human negligence and the real cause of the death cannot be ascertained based on the hospital records. Therefore, a local inspection of the dead body was necessary. The public was also anxious to know the real cause of death of their leader, he added.

He also sought to direct the Union government to make a local inspection by exhuming the dead body of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
