Karnataka: Privilege or security' for VK Sasikala in prison?

Sasikala is isolated from other prisoners with barricades on either side of the row of cells for her security and protection.

Bengaluru: Though the one man inquiry committee headed by former IAS officer Vinay Kumar is yet to submit the report on the alleged corruption in the Bengaluru Central prison and the VIP treatment given to the general secretary of the AIADMK (Amma) V.K. Sasikala top official sources told this newspaper that the so called ‘preferential’ treatment to Sasikala was not an aberration but a ‘security’ requirement.

“Sasikala is lodged in a cell in the women convicts’ enclosure. There are five cells in a row, four are empty and being temporarily used by prison officials for administrative purpose. Sasikala is isolated from other prisoners with barricades on either side of the row of cells for her security and protection. The same arrangement will continue till the committee finds a fault with it and suggests an alternative to the government,” said an officer on condition of anonymity.

He added that Vinay Kumar’s report will examine the allegations made by former DIG (Prisons) D. Roopa last month but the report will not cover the allegation of '2 crore, which exchanged hands between the Sasikala faction and some prison officials as a bribe to accord VIP treatment to her.

“The terms of reference of the inquiry do not include the allegation of bribe and hence is not being looked into,” he added. Roopa had alleged of sweeping corruption in the Bengaluru Central Prison and VIP treatment being dished out to Sasikala in exchange for huge bribe to some prison officials, including the then DGP&IG Prisons, H.N.S. Rao, who has since retired.
