Nitin Gadkari calls meet on NH, Kuthiran

The work of the tunnels was halted 10 months ago due to non-payment of dues to the sub-contractor by main contractor KMC.

Thrissur: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari will be holding a meeting to discuss the inordinate delay in the completion of the Mannuthy-Vadakkenchery six-lane toll highway and the one-kilometre long Kuthiran twin tunnel.

The meeting, being called on the request of Thrissur MP T.N. Prathapan, will be held at the Parliament building. Alathur MP Ramya Haridas and principal secretary of PWD in Kerala will also be taking part in the discussions.

The work of the tunnels was halted 10 months ago due to non-payment of dues to the sub-contractor by main contractor KMC. The cost of the tunnel which was Rs 100 crore has now been escalated to Rs 150 crore. The contract for the highway and tunnel works were signed with KMC by NHAI in 2009 and as per this contract the works needed to be completed within 30 months from the time of commencement.

Mr Prathapan said he will demand the early completion of the road and the tunnel and their commissioning.
