Madras High Court order against 85 per cent quota reserved

The judge ordered maintenance of status quo in the admission process till then (final orders are passed).

Chennai: The Madras high court has reserved orders on a batch of petitions, challenging an order of the state government, which earmarked 85 per cent of the seats available in the state quota to students who have studied in Tamil Nadu State Board and the remaining 15 per cent to students who have studied in CBSE and other boards for admission to MBBS/BDS courses for the academic year 2017-18.

Justice K.Ravichandra Baabu reserved orders on the petitions filed by C.Darnish Kumar, a CBSE student and two others, which sought to quash the government order dated June 22, after hearing elaborate arguments from senior counsel P.S.Raman and Nalini Chidambaram and others and Advocate general R.Muthukumaraswamy.

The judge ordered maintenance of status quo in the admission process till then (final orders are passed). During the arguments, the advocate general submitted that the state government was still opposing Neet. Two Bills seeking exemption from Neet were still awaiting the assent of the President of India. Nearly 4.20 lakh students studied under the state board syllabus and 4000 students were from CBSE.

About 50 percent questions in Neet were not based on state board syllabus.
Moreover, majority of the CBSE schools were only in urban areas and not in rural. Inequality exists in Neet.

Of the 84,000 students from state board, who appeared for Neet examination, 2000 students would get seats. Of the 2000 CBSE students who appeared for Neet examination, 520 will get seats as per the reservation, he added.
