Protests hit University of Hyderabad green drive

The saplings will be protected and maintained by CREDAI over the next three years, according to the programme.

Hyderabad: The sapling plantation drive at the University of Hyderabad was marred by students protesting over the suicide of dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula. Vice-chancellor, Prof. Appa Rao Podile and GHMC Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin were chief guests at the launch of Telanganaku Harita Haram in UoH.

The students shouted slogans and held placards as Prof. Podile was speaking. Those present at the programme said that the chief guests had to cut short the programme.

UoH officials said that more than one lakh saplings were planted over 250 acres on Monday with help from the HMDA and the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India.

The saplings will be protected and maintained by CREDAI over the next three years, according to the programme.

In Osmania University Prof. E. Suresh Kumar, Registrar, launched the plantation drive. On Monday 81,000 saplings were planted in the campus for which the university said that 20,000 volunteers from the National Service Scheme from OU constituent and affiliated colleges were involved.

In Maulana Azad National Urdu University Vice Chancellor, Dr Mohammad Aslam Parvaiz participated in the sapling plantations along with students and faculty of the university. Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association members and Madhapur police officials participated in the drive.
