Student’s death sparks huge protest in Tiruchy
Tiruchy: Vehicular traffic on the busy Woriyur area in Tiruchy city was paralysed for several hours on Tuesday when a section of the general public including parents and relatives of a 12-year-old school girl resorted to road roko protesting against the death of a student, due to alleged lethargic attitude of the school authorities in not rushing the student to a hospital in time.
The girl, Ilakkia, studying in seventh class in the CSI-run Methodist Girls Higher Secondary School, Woriyur, accidentally fell down from the staircase of the first floor on June 7 and received a severe head injury. But the school authorities, instead of rushing the girl to the hospital, simply asked her to take rest, delaying her admission to hospital by three hours.
Thereafter, the girl was treated at a private hospital by her parents and then admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government hospital here, where the girl died this morning not responding to treatment.
Protesting against this, the parents and relatives of the girl and others resorted to road roko at Woriyur, saying had the school administration admitted the girl in the hospital in time, she could have survived.
Police rushed to the spot and persuaded the agitators to disperse peacefully with an assurance that suitable action will be initiated against the school authorities and restored normalcy with dignity.
