CPI annoyed over move on commissionerates

The CPI believes that such an important decision should have been taken only after holding proper discussions within the ruling front.

Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI is annoyed with the state government's move to grant magisterial powers to police commissioners .

The party has expressed dissatisfaction over the decision. The CPI believes that such an important decision should have been taken only after holding proper discussions within the ruling front.

The move is aimed at giving powers to the commissioners to order firing, impose section 144 and enforce KAPA. The CPI is annoyed since these powers which are vested with Collectors and revenue officials who come under revenue department held by the party, are being handed over to police officers unilaterally.

The government had taken the decision to set up commissionerate in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi recently and the official order is expected to be issued any time now. Though the government has not mentioned magisterial powers in the decision, the CPI has serious apprehensions about the move.

It feels the decision will pave the way for two power centres in major cities and this should be avoided .
