Clean water in a week, says Thrissur mayor

Mayor said that in all such issues of pipe leaks, the civic body had asked Kerala Water Authority and NHAI to do necessary arrangements.

Thrissur: The issue of residents in Thrissur Corporation getting muddy water at homes throu-gh the connections provided by the civic body for the past few weeks will be solved in a week, Mayor Ajitha Vijayan has said.

With the issue being widely reported in media for the past few days, the Mayor on Tuesday along with ruling and Opposition councilors visited the 14.5 MLD treatment plant at Peechi Dam from where water is being sourced to the civic body limit and some other panchayats.

“It has been found that the water in the plant is clean and there will be another reason for the water turning muddy. As many as 200 water valves in the corporation limit are being checked and some amount of mud were found in them. There are leakages in the main supply line and that needs to be plugged as well,” Ms Vijayan said.

In front of the Kerala Agricultural Univers-ity at Thoddappadi in Mannuty, a major supply pipe from Peechi has been damaged during the road widening works of NHAI and for the past three years the pipe have been leaking.

Mayor said that in all such issues of pipe leaks, the civic body had asked Kerala Water Authority and NHAI to do necessary arrangements.

However, Opposition deputy leader John Daniel of UDF and BJP leader in the council M.S. Sampoorna said that mayor and engineers of the corporation needed take a decision to improve the efficiency of contractor in charge of doing maintenance of the supply pipes and till now the civic body engineers had failed to find the exact reason for the supplied water getting muddy.
