Civic polls in July end or August

The tenure of 68 muni-cipalities and Nizama-bad, Karimnagar, and Ramgundam municipal corporations end on July 2.

Hyderabad: With the completion of elections to panchayat raj institutions, the State Election Commission is taking steps to hold elections to municipalities and municipal corporations.

The tenure of 68 muni-cipalities and Nizama-bad, Karimnagar, and Ramgundam municipal corporations end on July 2. Apart from these, the government created another 68 municipalities in March 2018.

As per Section 10 of the Telangana Municipali-ties Act and Section 8 of the Municipal Corpora-tion Act, the government has to finalise the delimitation of wards in civic bodies as per the population of BC, SC and ST voters.

In 2018, the High Court directed government and the SEC to hold elections to the civic bodies after enumerating the BC, SC and ST voters’ populations. The government did not do so and the SEC in May moved the High Court.

On May 29, the court directed the government to take an appropriate decision regarding finalization of delimitation of wards wherever necessary and reservations within two weeks.

An SEC official said the government was taking steps to complete the work within two weeks. Keeping this in view, the SEC is preparing hold elections at the end of July or in August.
