As the garbage issue continues to plague the city, the BBMP is now planning to take the help of Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) to identify the public places, vacant plots and footpaths where it is being dumped by the people.
A while ago, the agency had deployed marshals to keep a check on the garbage dumping in public spaces, but says this isn’t working satisfactorily in all areas and the RWAs may have to be roped in as additional support.
Said a senior BBMP officer, “There are still areas where people are throwing garbage on the footpaths or on empty plots. So now we plan to take the help of the RWAs to identify the trouble spots. Once they inform us about them, we will deploy the marshals at these places to keep a check on the practice. It is only when citizens and civic bodies work in co-ordination can we bring in change.”
A few RWAs have already met the BBMP and offered to help it in curbing public dumping of garbage, according to him. Going by another officer, the plan is still being discussed and will soon be placed before the mayor and commissioner for their approval.
“We have been receiving complaints that people are still dumping garbage on roads, pavements and vacant plots . To put a stop to this, we will need the assistance of the RWAs. Once the approval is given, we will frame guidelines on how the RWAs and BBMP can work together to stop the nuisance of garbage dumping in public spaces,” he explained.
