Hyderabad: Osmania University has made internship compulsory for law students from this academic year. Law students have to pursue a three-week internship at the end of the second year and two weeks in the final year.
This internship will be recorded in the memo of marks with grading and could help improve their placement prospects.
Law students have to undergo a three-week internship either with judges of the Supreme Court, High Court, some tribunals, senior advocates with more than 10 years standing, corporate law officers or even NGOs, etc.
According to Prof. G.B. Reddy, dean, OU faculty of law, the internship is meant for all the students of law colleges including private colleges affiliated to OU. “Till now mostly the national law schools and some corporate law schools had made internships compulsory. This is probably the first time a state university is introducing internships for first year students as well.”
He said earlier internships were for final year students for some clinical papers. “This time we have made it mandatory for every student of the second semester after completion of the exam to undergo internship for a period of three weeks.”
After the internship, students should get a certificate and submit a project report duly signed by the professional.
Dr Panth Naik Karamtot, professor, OU College of Law, said, “In the five-year course, we have introduced internships from the third year so that students get a minimum of three internships during their course.”
