Chennai: Locals cheer water pipe installation

The operators who installed the faucet advised residents not to use it for drinking and only utilise it for household work.

Chennai: Residents of Ayyappanthangal erupted in cheer as the town Panchayat officials installed a drinking water tap in VGN Nagar on Sunday after Deccan Chronicle had reported the plight of the residents and the difficulties faced by them to get drinking water.

The official told DC that he immediately inspected the area after receiving the complaint and informed the operators to provide a drinking water facility by the next morning as the water was available and it could not be supplied to houses due to blockage in the pipes.

“At 11 am, the clerk himself came with two operators and set up the faucet. The officials said our apartments are in an elevated area – the reason why there is no proper supply of water. So, they installed a tap in the street for all the residents to use,” said Senthil Kumar, a resident.

Earlier, the residents were dependent on water trucks and each household would buy about four cans at the price of Rs 5 each. Now, water can be availed at free of cost and moreover, there is no restriction on the quantity of water each household can fill.

V.P. Sundarrajan, resident of the area, said the town Panchayat officials took action against the issue after a year. Also, the water supplied earlier was murky and comparatively, it is clearer now. This move by the officials also came as a boon to people not having Panchayat water pipe connection.

However, the operators who installed the faucet advised residents not to use it for drinking and only utilise it for household work.
