Chennai: 750 motorists slapped with fines

A majority of those pulled up and fined were two wheeler riders. They were booked for offences like over speeding and rash driving.

Chennai: Chennai police, during their weekend drive against motorists violating traffic rules, booked as many as 750 drivers and collected a total fine of Rs 3 lakh from them on Saturday night. The week-end drive took place between 10 pm on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday.

A majority of those pulled up and fined were two wheeler riders. They were booked for offences like over speeding and rash driving, a senior traffic police official said. Of the 750 motorists booked, nearly 60 were found to be driving under the influence of liquor, police added.

The City police usually start their weekend drive against speeding and other violations at around 10 pm and it goes on till 2 am and again they start their Sunday morning drive from 5 am to 8 pm because there were complaints that youngsters are using the particular window to race on major roads like ECR, OMR and Chennai bypass among others.

On Saturday night, the police also focused on 40 places, including areas like Kamarajar Salai, Besant Nagar, Sastri Nagar, Rajaji Salai, Poonamallee 400-Feet road, Ega junction, Greenways Salai and Thiruvanmiyur.
