Centre grounds Telangana government's twin towers' plans

The towers would not only pose a security threat to Begumpet airport but also to flights operating from there.

Hyderabad: Minister for civil aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Saturday made it clear that it would not be possible to give approval to the TS government plans to build the police command control twin towers in Banjara Hills at a height above the permissible limit. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr Raju said that the civil aviation ministry was mandated to implement these norms in areas in the vicinity of airports keeping security in view.

He said the height of the proposed twin towers would not only pose a security threat to Begumpet airport, which is in its vicinity, but also to flights operating from there. Since the Begumpet airport is being used for VIP visits, adopting stringent security norms became all the more important, he said. “We can’t adopt different yardsticks for different states. We have to follow a uniform policy for the entire country. It is for this reason we have denied permission to the Telangana government to build police twin towers at a height above the permissible limit,” Mr Raju said. He said the civil aviation ministry has given colour coding location-wise with regard to permissible height of buildings surrounding airports.
