Thiruvananthpuram: AICC general secretary Oommen Chandy has flayed the SFI for its hypocritical attitude towards democracy saying that it pays only lip service to it. "It does not allow even girl students to study," he said on Saturday. He was inaugurating a day-long fast by KSU state president K. M. Abhijith at Martyrs' Square at Palayam demanding legal action against those behind the suicide attempt made by a girl student of University College the other day.

The first-year degree student was found in the women's toilet with her veins slashed allegedly due to harassment by the SFI. Mr Chandy congratulated Abhijith for taking up 'dharma yudh,' an initiative against the SFI's goonda activities, and said all organisations should be given the right to work. Congress MLA K. Muraleedharan came down heavily on the CPM leadership and recalled that University College was once a respected institution which had now become a place to breed goondas.

"It is high time the University College is closed down and turned into a historical institute. It is a college which develops only goondas. When the UDF comes back to power, it will ensure that it does not evolve into a centre to create assailants," he said.
